In what industry analysts are calling a "landmark moment" for the American auto industry, Ford Motor Company and General Motors have announced a joint venture to build and operate a nationwide EV charging network comprising 10,000 new fast-charging stations over the next three years.
The joint venture, branded "ChargeAmerica," will see equal investment from both automakers totaling $2 billion. The network will use the NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector and will be open to all EV brands, not just Ford and GM vehicles.
Unlike existing networks that concentrate in urban areas and along major highways, ChargeAmerica will specifically target underserved rural communities and smaller cities. The company plans to place stations at existing gas stations, truck stops, and retail locations to leverage existing infrastructure.
All stations will feature 350 kW chargers capable of adding 200+ miles of range in under 15 minutes for compatible vehicles. Each location will have a minimum of 8 chargers to reduce wait times—a common complaint with existing networks.
"Range anxiety is the number one barrier to EV adoption," said Ford CEO Jim Farley. "By working together, we can solve this problem faster and more efficiently than either company could alone." The announcement sent both companies' stock prices up 3-4% in after-hours trading.
